Minnesota Historical & Cultural Heritage Grants
The Minnesota Historical Society administers the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants program, also known as Legacy Grants. Funding for the grant comes from the state Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, using sales tax revenue, after Minnesotans voted yes on the 2008 Clean Water, Land, and Legacy amendment.
MHS offers two grants through this program. Both grant types support individual institutions or collaborative projects, and there is a long list of eligible projects. The differences between the grant programs are the amount of funding and length of project. More information on each grant program is linked below. The final products of a grant project must be held by a Minnesota-based organization or institution with access to the public.
Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants (under $20,000)
MHS offers small grants quarterly, with deadlines in January, April, July, and October. It supports year-long grant projects.
Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Large Grants (over $20,000)
MHS offers large grants annually, with a pre-application deadline in May, a final submission deadline in July for projects beginning the following January. This grant program supports 18-month projects, completed between January of one year and June the following year.
Backlog can help with grant-funded projects. We will need to know the scope of the project and photographs of the collections and storage space. Schedule a short Zoom meeting with us so we can gather information, and we can write a proposal to give a cost estimate. Shoot an email to emma@backlog-archivists.com or fill out our contact page to get started.
